বাংলাদেশে তামাক সেবনের কারণে বছরে ১২ লাখ লোক বিভিন্ন সংক্রামক রোগে আক্রান্ত হয়। এর মধ্যে ১ লাখ ৬১ হাজার মানুষ তামাকজনিত রোগে মারা যায়। বুধবার (১৯ জুন) দুপুরে সচিবালয়ে এক সংবাদ সম্মেলন এ তথ্য জানান তামাক নিয়ন্ত্রণ সেলের কর্মকর্তা যুগ্ম সচিব খায়রুল আলম শেখ।
বিশ্ব তামাকমুক্ত দিবস উপলক্ষে এই সংবাদ সম্মেলনের আয়োজন করে স্বাস্থ্য মন্ত্রণালয়।
প্রতি বছর ৩১ মে বিশ্ব তামাকমুক্ত দিবস পালন করা হয়। অনিবার্য কারণে এই বছর ২০ জুন তামাকমুক্ত দিবস পালন করা হবে। দিবসটির এবারের প্রতিপাদ্য হচ্ছে- ‘তামাকে হয় ফুসফুস ক্ষয়, সুস্বাস্থ্য কাম্য, তামাক নয়’। দিবসটি উপলক্ষে সরকারি ও বেসরকারিভাবে শোভাযাত্রা, সভা, সেমিনারসহ বিভিন্ন কর্মসূচি পালন করা হবে।
সংবাদ সম্মেলনে জানানো হয়, তামাকের কারণে প্রতি বছর সারা বিশ্বে ৭০ লাখ মানুষ অকালে মারা যান। এর মধ্যে পরোক্ষ তামাক ব্যবহারের কারণে মারা যান ৯ লাখ মানুষ।
